Writing in Real Life

"Writing In Real Life is here for the writer who struggles, the writer who makes mistakes and the writer who is passionately committed to writing regardless of acknowledgment, reward or honors. I have been on four shows, but the majority of my writing has been for my own self-growth and entertainment. My goal is to tell the truth about my writing path so that others may learn from it, grow from it and maybe get more juice for their own creative endeavors."

The Pitch

As I prep to go out with a law show pitch, I reflect on all the pitching lessons I’ve learned along the way.
1. From a coach, I learned to visualize the meeting and see the outcome I want.
2. From a fantastic pitcher who has sold 26 projects (including one with me), I learned to speak to the pitchee like they are my good friend. It’s a conversation. Keep it colloquial.
3. From my pitching experiences, pay attention to the pitchee’s reactions. If their eyes start to glaze over, time to up my energy or condense the material. Or possibly, ask a question to make sure they are with me.
4. From a pitch class, I learned to pitch with passion. Make it entertaining. Engage with the material so the pitchee can feel the pitch.
5. Finally, practice, practice, practice. In front of a mirror. Recording myself. Watching the recording. Make notes and make adjustments. Pitching is performing and it’s part of being a successful writer.
